My personal project

What is bioinfomatics? What can we do by using it?(Final Presentation)

I like computer programming and somehow want to approach human body by computer technology. Thanks to Biohack-achademy lecture, I started to have curiosity about ‘bioinformatics’ and ‘synthetic-biology’. Through this presentation,I want to output my knowledge about bioinformatics.And I also want to imagine our fantastic future possibilities.

The definition of bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. As an interdisciplinary field of science, Bioinformatics combines Computer Science, Biology, Mathematics, and Engineering to analyze and interpret biological data.The main task of bioinformatics is analysis and interpretation of various types of data.

My imagination of our furture

Searching about bioinformatics,I realized that what I really want to do is ‘Synthetic biology’.I want to not only Read(analysis) but also Write(synthetic) DNA.The below picture is my imagination of our furture.
In the furture,DIY biologists will produce synthetic plants or synthetic cars.The outsourcing systems and biological infrastructure will enable us to do like that.The only thing we have to do is to design cells.

I want to compare how slime mold and ants will solve the same maze.
Thanks to a biohackachademy’s workshop,I realized some uniqe characteristics of slime molds.
I found the article that slime mold can select the shortest route of a maze. Ants also can do that.

リモートから研究設備にアクセスしたい。そうすればより、オープンソース化され、DIYが捗るのでは? 全部パソコンから操作してあとはロボットにやってほしい(顕微鏡とかPCRとかも) そうすれば実験の前にコンピューターでシミュレーションできるし、危険な組み合わせの時とかは実行前にエラー出るし、安全では?

Hello, my name is Kazuhide Hane.
I am a medical student at Kobe University.
I’m currently very interested in biotechnology.

Our issue

If you suddenly want to start learning about bio-technology, how do you begin?
Reading books? Searching the Internet?If you think It is not enough, What would you do?
Conduct research in a university laboratory or find a job in a company?
But what about people who cannot access these resources because of some personal reason.How can they start bio-technology?

If you don’t have curiosity about bio-technology, I think this is because you assume it is difficult and is not useful for you daily life. I want to talk to you about the potential it has and how it is concerned with you!

Look at this picture. They are cloned monkeys.
A month ago, Chinese scientists created them for the first time.
Now Humans have the technology to change genes freely.
I think Technology itself is neither good nor bad.
It’s up to us.
But we don’t think it in indivisual level yet.
It’s a severe probrem.
In a few years we have to decide how to use it in individual or social level. Are you for or against designer babies?
We need the place to prepare for our near feature choice.
We need the place to feel close to biotechnology.

My solution

I recommend DIY bio, bio-hacking.   It is a movement that is utilized not just by researchers, but citizens alike for biotechnology.
Currently you can join a DIY bio lab course only in Tokyo and Yamaguchi in Japan.
I want to create a DIY bio lab in Kobe.
DIY bio lab is a platform for both citizen and researchers studying and exploring biotechnology.
You can create an affordable lab by making your own equipment. DIY bio lab is one solution for achieving goals for your personal project. It’s not necessary to buy expensive equipment.

Your merit

If you are a programmer, you can innovate something by using your engineering skill.
If you are interested in the community, you can hold relationship building events. Such as making maccori, a handmade pro-biotic beverage.
If you are interested in health and wellness, you can share knowledge acquired from your biohacking research with others to aid in sleep, nutrition, and meditation.
If you are an artist, you can acquire the way of new expression, through your work you can show people a new future.
If you are a biologist and want to explore something outside your expertise, you can freely enjoy biohacking without the structure of a course.
